ELGIN B. W. RaymondThe BW Raymond Watch was named after Elgin's founder, and former mayor of Chicago, B. W. Raymond. The B.W. Raymond moniker only appeared on watches that Elgin believed represented the absolute pinnacle of engineering and accuracy. “The B. W. Raymond is striking in its simplicity. The black numerals and the white dial strongly suggest a railroad watch.” Today, we are presenting this interesting timepiece, a B. W. Raymond Elgin Railroad Grade Pocket Watch dated from 1926, made by the famous U.S.A. watch markers Elgin Watch Company. It is a manual-winding watch with an original Elgin movement, 21 jewels, caliber grade 472, sub second, adjusted to 5 positions, U.S.A. made. The American Railroad Standard of timekeeping was 4 seconds per day, or 30 seconds per week. This is a tighter tolerance than COSC Chronometer certification. The movement grade 472 was made only between 1922 to 1926 and this timepiece is one of 21,000 ever made. It is high grade movement, has an Invar Balance, a nickel and steel alloy, is highly resistant to expansion and contraction caused by temperature and is officially certified for use on the railroad. After +97 years, it still has the original white dial with big bold Arabic Numerals, bold and red minute marks and large matching hands. This feature makes the time easy and clear as possible to read creating a distinctive and functional railroad watch aesthetic. The sub second is located at 6. Also, the dial is signed with the Elgin name/logo on top and "Invar Balance" on the bottom. It is cased in a 49.2mm round case, all 14K yellow gold filled.
